A diagnosis of complex pain is given when your pain has been present for more than 3 months and is negatively impacting your quality of life. It doesn’t respond to usual pain treatment and pathology has ruled out other more serious disease.
Complex pain may be associated with conditions such as arthritis, a centralized pain syndrome, neuropathic pain or idiopathic pain with no known cause.

We help you understand the cause of your pain by identifying what body mechanisms, thoughts, feelings and activities may be contributing to (or resulting from) it persisting.
Next Wave Occupational Therapy provides pain care treatment which focuses on helping people live well, despite pain. Pain becomes chronic when it persists for more than 12 weeks despite treatment.
There are many strategies that can help people to not only manage chronic pain but also to live a meaningful life.
Our OT Pain Care Program focuses on helping people to understand why their pain persists. OT Pain management teaches people ways to manage pain such as pacing, use of assistive technology and equipment, sensory modulation and stress management.
